SUMI Lift Trucks Pty Ltd is a solely South Australian owned company, producing a range of robust, compact and reliable battery electric forklifts, designed specifically for the Australian and S/E Asian markets. The company evolved from a company set up in 1982 by two Adelaide businessmen, initially assembling, selling and servicing American manufactured Big Joe trucks. These trucks did not adequately meet the needs of Australian customers and were often too large for the requirements of the Asian market and their more compact environment. With this in mind, a modern, purpose built factory was constructed in 1987 at the Dudley Park site, to produce a new range of trucks designed specifically to meet the needs of these markets.
